How to create an effective cover letter with CoverLetterCoach

Every cover letter should include the following aspects: contact details of the recipient and sender, a formal greeting, 2 or 3 paragraphs for the main body of the letter and a formal closing with the sender’s signature. Cover letters should always be tailored to the needs of the vacancy and the applicant. Check out our guide to formatting a cover letter for more advice on how to structure a winning cover letter.

The ideal cover letter design is the one that best accompanies your resume design and any other documents you may be sending with your job application such as portfolios, references, etc. It is not compulsory to have a creative or original design for your cover letter, it is better to make sure it is easy-to-read and clear for the hiring manager. But if, for example, you have used a header on your resume, it is best to be consistent and use this same header for your cover letter.

Often a confusing point for candidates when they first write a cover letter, but fear not, take a look at our guide on how to address a cover letter to find out the best ways of catching the hiring manager’s attention right from the very start.

A cover letter should be tailored to the specific vacancy the candidate is applying to. This means each individual letter could be oriented toward different information. More details about what to include in cover letters can be found in our guide to cover letter templates. However, generally speaking, cover letters should highlight relevant achievements of the jobseeker that have allowed them, in previous experience, to fulfill the duties required by the role. The cover letter is not supposed to be a repetition of the resume nor should it talk the recruiter through the candidate’s work experience. Using the vacancy ad, cover letters should sell the applicant’s profile to recruiters by bringing attention to accomplishments with numerical examples, skills, and expertise that demonstrate the person’s suitability for the role.

A cover letter should generally be no longer than 1 Letter size page. There are exceptions for professionals with longer work experience or for academics who include more information about publications, portfolios, theses, etc., however, the general rule should be to avoid extensive cover letters of more than 1 page.

Job Search Questions

It is essential to include a cover letter with your job application if you want to make a lasting impression on the recruiter. Every day, hiring managers receive hundreds of resumes and the best way to make your application stand out is by including a convincing cover letter. There are also some companies who do not accept applications for vacancies without a cover letter so your resume could be sent to the trash without a second look if it’s not accompanied by a professional cover letter.

Yes, candidates should always create one cover letter for each job application. Similarly to resumes, your cover letter needs to be tailored to the vacancy, which means selecting the right experience, achievements, skills, and keywords to use for the specific role on offer. There is nothing worse for a recruiter than receiving a generic cover letter that has been sent to dozens of employers without any consideration for the recipient and the position available.

Yes, despite not requesting a cover letter as part of the job application process, serious jobseekers should always include a customized cover letter as part of their application in order to bring attention to their professional profile and explain to recruiters how they can be an asset to the company.
